About the album Watermark

Watermark, in 1988, was the birth of an entire sonic universe that established Enya as the undisputed "priestess" of ethereal music. After her departure from the family band Clannad, Enya joined forces with producer Nicky Ryan and lyricist Roma Ryan, creating a work that would redefine the boundaries of New Age and Celtic music.

The heart of the album beats in the innovative technique of multi-layered vocals. Enya recorded hundreds of vocal channels (up to 200 in some points), creating a "vocal orchestra" that sounds like a choir of angels. The style is a hypnotic fusion of Enya's Celtic roots through the use of the Irish language and traditional instruments such as the uilleann pipes, from the classical structure with strong choral references and lyrics in Latin (as in the imposing Cursum Perficio) and from the electronic atmosphere with layers of synthesizers that create dreamlike landscapes.

Despite its introspective character, Watermark achieved unexpected commercial success, selling over 11,000,000 copies worldwide (!) The iconic single Orinoco Flow (Sail Away) conquered the top of the charts, proving that quality, relaxing music could become a global phenomenon.
