About the album Angel Witch
The eponymous debut of Angel Witch in 1980 is one of the cornerstones of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM). Although its commercial journey did not match that of Iron Maiden, its influence on subsequent thrash, speed, and doom metal was catalytic. The titular track Angel Witch remains one of the most recognizable anthems of heavy metal worldwide.
The musical style of the album combines the dark atmosphere of Black Sabbath with the speed and energy of Motörhead. It is characterized by melodic leads, catchy choruses, and a primal aggression that even inspired Metallica. The lyrical themes are heavily influenced by the fantastical and the occult, with references to witches, demons (Baphomet), ancient mythologies (Atlantis), and death. The album was released on November 17, 1980, and was produced by the band itself at Roundhouse Studios in London.
The iconic artwork is the painting "The Fallen Angels Entering Pandemonium" by the English painter John Martin. Its dark, biblical style perfectly matches the album's atmosphere. Although sales were limited, the album is now considered a cult classic.
