R.E.M. operated as a trio from 1998 to 2011, after the departure of drummer Bill Berry in 1997. The band consisted of Michael Stipe (vocals), Peter Buck (guitar), and Mike Mills (bass). During this period, R.E.M. released several albums, including "Up" (1998), "Reveal" (2001), and "Accelerate" (2008), experimenting with electronic and acoustic elements while continuing to evolve their sound.
