About the album Mantaray
The album Mantaray was released in September 2007 and is the first (and only to date) solo album by the iconic Siouxsie Sioux. Its title comes from a lyric in the song Sea Of Tranquility, where the manta ray is described as a "ghost roaring from the depths." Siouxsie chose the title as something abstract that symbolizes deep space and the ocean (!)
The style of the album is eclectic, combining art rock, pop, glam-rock, industrial, and cabaret elements. Critics described it as a “liberated” work with a cinematic sound (often reminiscent of themes from James Bond movies). Thematically, the album reflects her personal "transformation" after her divorce from Budgie and the breakup of the Banshees. All the lyrics were written by Siouxsie, while the music was the result of collaboration with the producers and her band. The song "One Mile Below" was written entirely by herself. The production was handled by Steve Evans (a collaborator of Robert Plant) and Charlie Jones (bassist of Goldfrapp).
Mantaray reached No. 39 on the UK Albums Chart.
