About the album Good Old Boys

Randy Newman's initial intention for the fourth studio album was to create a concept album starring a fictional character named Johnny Cutler from the "deep South." Newman wanted, through this album, to satirize and critique the mentality of the White Americans of the Southern United States. Eventually, Good Old Boys was released with several different songs from those originally written by Newman. How the album was initially intended to be appeared in 2002 on a reissue of the record, which included as a second CD Johnny Cutler's Birthday, the original concept of the album.

Good Old Boys was released in September 1974, containing recordings made during the years 1972, 1973, and 1974. All the compositions are by Randy Newman except for the song Every Man A King, which was written in 1935 by Huey Long, governor of the State of Louisiana, to promote his election campaign at that time (!)

Good Old Boys became the album that made Randy Newman known and beloved in the United States. The album reached No. 36 on the Billboard chart and No. 58 in Canada. As for the couple on the cover, it is a random couple in a bar at Atlanta airport. The man and woman in the photo "appear" to be Johnny Cutler and his wife Marie, the protagonists of the album.
