About the album Legalize It

In 1974, a significant disagreement arose over financial rewards between Peter Tosh and the owner of Island Records, Chris Blackwell, leading to Peter Tosh's departure from the Wailers. In 1976, he wrote and released his first album titled Legalize It through the then newly established Virgin Records.

Legalize It is now a legendary reggae album, a reference album for that specific genre of music. The album was produced by Tosh himself, and the compositions are his own, except for three songs that feature compositions by Bob Marley and Bunny Livingston. The album includes a re-recording of No Sympathy, which was originally released on Soul Rebels by Bob Marley And The Wailers in 1970.

Legalize It became a tremendous success for Peter Tosh, considering the circumstances, selling 1,000,000 copies in the United States by 1999 (!). This meant that for 23 years, the album sold slowly and steadily. In the year of its release, it barely entered the Billboard Top-200, reaching No.199.
