Heligoland by Massive Attack
About the album Heligoland
Heligoland, released on February 8, 2010, by Virgin Records, is the fifth studio album by Massive Attack and is named after a German archipelago.
Its musical style combines trip hop, downtempo, electronica, and alternative rock. It is considered more "organic" and less digital than the previous 100th Window, using more live instruments and brass while maintaining the familiar dark and hypnotic atmosphere. The production of Heligoland was mainly done by Robert Del Naja (3D) and Neil Davidge, with Grant Marshall (Daddy G) contributing to specific tracks. Additional production was done by Tim Goldsworthy. The recording of the songs lasted from 2005 to 2009 (!) and mainly took place at the band's studio in Bristol. The album is renowned for its "all-star" cast of guests like Damon Albarn (Blur/Gorillaz) on Saturday Come Slow, Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star) in the atmospheric Paradise Circus, and Tunde Adebimpe (TV On The Radio) on the opening Pray For Rain.
Heligoland received positive reviews and went gold in the UK from the BPI. It is considered a return to their roots, as it was the first album since Mezzanine (1998) where Daddy G actively participated.
