About the album In Our Lifetime
In the late 1970s, Marvin Gaye had reached the lowest point in his life and in his career. Bankrupt, addicted to cocaine, and with an album, Here, My Dear, that had commercially failed. Marvin Gaye recorded the fifteenth album of his career and his last for Motown Records in three studios, in Hollywood, Honolulu, and London during 1979 and 1980. In Our Lifetime was released in 1981.
Despite the difficult personal circumstances, the album is light and with compositions full of joy and energy. The influences of disco and funk are strong as the dance rhythm dominates most of the songs. This is clear in the three singles from the album, which were Ego Tripping Out, released well before the album's release, Praise, and Heavy Love Affair. Composition, production, arrangement belong to Marvin Gaye himself.
In Our Lifetime reached No. 32 on the Billboard, while in Great Britain it rose to No. 48.
