And suddenly in 1971, Marvin Gaye changes everything in his career and from light-hearted love songs he writes for himself or for others, he decides to present an album-protest about the Vietnam War and what is happening in the U.S. society in the early seventies. What's Going On is one of the most complete albums of all time and places Marvin Gaye among the "sacred giants" of soul.

Musically, the album combines and touches on the best that existed at that time in black music. Primarily, there is simple soul, progressive soul, and psychedelic soul, while the orchestration, influenced by classical music, does not go unnoticed. The artist himself is involved in the production of the album, as well as in the composition of the songs, together with a multitude of other composers.

The sales of What's Going On have reached 500,000 copies in the U.S. and another 300,000 in Great Britain. When it was first released, it reached No. 6 in the U.S. In 1984, after the tragic death of its creator, the album re-entered the Billboard Top-200.
