About the album Here, My Dear
The problems in Marvin Gaye's marriage to Anna Gordy Gaye began in 1975. Eventually, the divorce came in 1977 after legal disputes. Under these circumstances, Gaye wrote and recorded various songs between March 1977 and July 1978, which reflect the situation he was experiencing with his wife and the legal battles he had with her. All these songs constituted his fourteenth album titled Here, My Dear.
Here, My Dear, a double album, musically moves in the 1970s soul with many funk elements. Marvin Gaye composed all the songs except for three, in which he had the assistance of Ed Townsend. Marvin Gaye was also responsible for the album's production.
The album did not become a great success upon its release. Marvin Gaye himself did not believe in it and was not interested in promoting it as part of its proceeds would go to his ex-wife. Over the years, and after the artist's death, there has been a turnaround and reconsideration of the value of Here, My Dear, and it is now considered one of Marvin Gaye's great works.
