About the album If I Could Only Remember My Name

If I Could Only Remember My Name by David Crosby is one of the most unique and influential albums of the West Coast scene, having evolved from a "chaotic" production into a timeless masterpiece of psychedelic folk. It was released on February 22, 1971, by Atlantic Records. The album was created during a period of intense mourning for Crosby, after the death of his partner, Christine Hinton, in a car accident in 1969.

David Crosby himself took on the production, with sound engineer Stephen Barncard. Due to the vast number of contributions to the album's recordings from friends and legends of the era (Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Graham Nash), the group of musicians received the unofficial nickname "Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra." The recordings took place primarily at Wally Heider Studios in San Francisco and at A&M Studios in Hollywood, between late 1970 and early 1971. The sound and style of If I Could Only Remember My Name is a blend of psychedelic folk and folk rock. It is characterized by dreamy atmospheres, improvisations, jazz harmonies, and multi-layered vocals without necessarily having lyrics. The cover was designed by Gary Burden and depicts Crosby in a blur, with a sunset in the background, reflecting the psychedelic and introspective mood of the album. The singles released from the album are Music Is Love and Orleans.

Despite the initial negative reviews the album received, it reached No. 12 on the Billboard 200 and became a gold record in the United States. In 2010, the Vatican's newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, ranked the album second on the list of the best albums of all time, only behind the Beatles' Revolver (!)
