No1 Record by Big Star
About the album No1 Record
The album No1 Record by Big Star is considered one of the most influential records in the history of rock, laying the foundations for the power pop genre. Its artistic value was recognized later, turning it into one of the top cult masterpieces. The release of the record took place in June 1972 by Ardent Records.
No1 Record was based on the Lennon-McCartney model. Chris Bell was the perfectionist of the production, adding layers of harmonies and processed guitars, while Alex Chilton brought a more raw, spontaneous energy. Their chemistry created a sound that combined British pop of the '60s with American rock. It includes classic songs such as Thirteen, The Ballad Of El Goodo, and In The Street (which became widely known as the theme for the series That '70s Show).
Despite rave reviews (Billboard had written that "every track could be a single"), the record sold less than 10,000 copies in its initial release. This was due to huge distribution problems of the Stax Records company, resulting in fans reading reviews but not finding the album in stores. The album "gave birth" to entire scenes of alternative music. Without it, the music of R.E.M., The Replacements (who wrote the song "Alex Chilton"), and Teenage Fanclub would be very different. In 2025, the album was honored with its induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
