About the album The Crossing
The Crossing is the iconic debut album of the Scottish rock band Big Country, released in July 1983. It is considered one of the most impressive debuts of the '80s, distinguished by its unique "Celtic" sound. The album was recorded with producer Steve Lillywhite, after a previous attempt with Chris Thomas was rejected by the band.
The musical style of the album is characterized as anthem rock with strong post-punk elements and Celtic influences. The lyrics focus on themes of loss, hope, and rural life, adding an epic and emotional dimension to their music. Stuart Adamson and Bruce Watson used special effects (such as the MXR Pitch Transposer and the e-bow) to make the electric guitars sound like bagpipes, creating a pioneering sound that combined rock with tradition. Singles that stood out were Harvest Home, Fields Of Fire (400 Miles), In A Big Country, which was their only success in the US Top 40, and Chance, a dynamic ballad that also became a major hit in the United Kingdom.
The Crossing reached No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart, remaining in the top ten for ten weeks. It achieved significant success reaching No. 18 on the Billboard, which was rare for a British band of that era. It has sold over 2,000,000 copies worldwide and has gone platinum in the United Kingdom and Canada.
