America by America
About the album America
The debut album of America, titled after the band of Dewey Bunnell, Gerry Beckley, and Dan Peek, owes its fame and the 1,000,000 copies sold in the U.S. to the enormous success of the single "A Horse With No Name," which had been released six months earlier and managed to reach No.1 on the Billboard chart. The initial edition of the record did not include it, but it appeared in the immediately following re-releases for obvious reasons.
Another reason the album of America succeeded was its iconic cover. The three - smiling and happy - members of the group were photographed in front of a picture depicting three members of the "Crow" Native American tribe, who had been captured by the U.S. army in Montana in 1887. Above these six faces, the word America dominates... The message was clear and explicit.
The album America also succeeded beyond the United States of America. Noteworthy are its No.6 position in Spain, No.3 in Australia, and No.9 in Japan (!)
