About the album Adore
In 1998, the Smashing Pumpkins released Adore, an album with a completely different style from any of their previous three works. Adore is dark, subdued, and full of sad stories, while the element of electronic music is obviously the dominant musical element. The musical shift towards electronic rock happened as Corgan believed that the band's songs "no longer spoke" to teenagers.
Adore came at a time when Billy Corgan was experiencing a divorce and the death of his mother, so it was expected that these would affect him and this would be reflected in the compositions of the album. The Smashing Pumpkins initially recorded thirty songs and were planning to release another double album, but they limited themselves to a single CD, which was nearly 74 minutes long. Producers of the album were Corgan, Flood, and Brad Wood.
Adore did not manage to offer the success to the band that the previous album had brought. The 1,000,000 copies sold in the U.S. made it platinum once, while in the United Kingdom, it sold 100,000 copies.
