Right On Time by The Brothers Johnson
About the album Right On Time
The 1977 Right On Time was the second studio album by the Brothers Johnson, serving as a dazzling monument of the funk-disco era, bathed in the Los Angeles sun. Under the absolute guidance of the "wizard" Quincy Jones, the recording took place at the iconic A&M Studios. The atmosphere was electrified with perfectionism; Jones pushed brothers George and Louis Johnson to marry the raw energy of the street with crystalline pop production.
Alongside the Brothers Johnson were legends like Harvey Mason on drums and Ian Underwood on synthesizers, creating an exceptionally rich sound. The cover, with the two brothers confidently posing in futuristic white suits, perfectly reflects the aesthetics of the era: a promise of endless dancing under the disco ball (!)
Musically, the album is an explosive combination of slap bass, razor-sharp brass, and silky harmonies. The ultimate single, Strawberry Letter 23, with its psychedelic aura, soared to No1 on the R&B charts and No5 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the eponymous Right On Time dominated the discotheques. Right On Time managed to go platinum in the USA.
