About the album Phaedra

The album Phaedra by Tangerine Dream is considered one of the most important pillars of electronic music. Although the German Tangerine Dream had existed as a band since 1967, their debut was released on February 20, 1974. It was their first release on Richard Branson's Virgin Records.

  • The recording took place at The Manor Studios in England during November-December 1973. It was the first time they used the iconic Moog modular synthesizer, which was extremely unstable due to temperature, causing the characteristic "sliding" sound on the title track. The composers of the album were the classic trio of their "golden age": Edgar Froese, Christopher Franke, and Peter Baumann.

Despite its experimental style, it reached No. 15 on the UK charts, remaining there for 15 weeks and achieving six-figure sales. In Germany, however, it initially sold just 6,000 copies. The album established the sequencer-based sound and influenced generations of musicians in techno, ambient, and synth-pop. It is considered the work that brought electronic music out of the underground and introduced it to a wide audience.
