About the album Space Is The Place

Space Is the Place is considered one of the most iconic and "accessible" albums by Sun Ra and the Intergalactic Infinity Arkestra. It is a cornerstone of Afrofuturism, combining jazz with science fiction and ancient Egyptian mythology. The album was released in 1973 by a major label (Blue Thumb), making it more readily available to the public compared to his previous independent releases.

The record mainly delves into the realms of Avant-garde Jazz and Free Jazz. It includes strong elements of spiritual jazz and experimental Big Band sound. It is characterized by the use of Moog synthesizers, cosmic sounds, polyrhythms, and June Tyson's "astral" vocals. It was recorded on October 19 and 20, 1972, at Streeterville Studios in Chicago. The first side is occupied by the titular 21-minute epic, while the second side contains shorter, more chaotic compositions such as Sea Of Sound and Rocket Number Nine.

Space Is the Place influenced a multitude of artists from different genres, such as Parliament-Funkadelic, Earth, Wind & Fire, Sonic Youth, MC5, and contemporary creators like Janelle Monáe and Flying Lotus.
