About the album Speak English or Die

Speak English or Die, released in 1985 by Stormtroopers of Death (S.O.D.), is one of the most important landmarks in the history of extreme sound, as it essentially "gave birth" to the Crossover Thrash genre, a mix of thrash metal and hardcore punk. It is characterized by blitz speed, simple yet heavy riffs, and the use of the "mosh" rhythm. It is considered the album that united the punk and metal scenes, which until then were hostile towards each other.

The album was recorded in just three days, from July 2 to July 5, 1985, at Pyramid Sound Recording Studios in Ithaca, New York. Producers were Alex Perialas along with the band's guitarist, Scott Ian (Anthrax). The lyrics of the songs are deliberately provocative, filled with dark humor, sarcasm, and "politically incorrect" statements that caused reactions. It includes extremely short pieces, like The Ballad Of Jimi Hendrix which lasts just 4-7 seconds (!). Parts of the songs March Of the S.O.D. and Milano Mosh were used for years as opening signals and background music on MTV's Headbangers Ball show. The cover features the band’s mascot, Sargent D (Sergeant Death), who was designed by Scott Ian.

Speak English or Die has surpassed 1,000,000 copies sold worldwide, a huge success for an underground project.
