About the album One Second
One Second by Paradise Lost, released on July 14, 1997, is considered one of the most pivotal and controversial albums in the band's history. It marked a sharp departure from the "traditional" gothic metal of Draconian Times towards a more experimental, electronic sound.
The album is characterized by a shift towards gothic metal and dark wave, incorporating strong elements of electronic music and synth-pop. For the first time, keyboards and samples dominate the atmosphere, with Nick Holmes stating that buying a keyboard by Greg Mackintosh was crucial for the outcome. It was their first album to be recorded entirely in digital format.
The album swept the charts of Northern Europe, entering the Top 10 in Germany, Sweden, and Finland. In the United Kingdom, it reached position 31. It is the best-selling album in their career. It is estimated to have sold over 300,000 copies worldwide, with more than 120,000 sales in Germany alone.
