Better Living Through Chemistry by Fatboy Slim
About the album Better Living Through Chemistry
Better Living Through Chemistry, a 1996 release, is the debut studio album by British electronic music producer Norman Cook, known as Fatboy Slim. This particular album is considered and is one of the cornerstones of the big beat genre.
The musical style of the album is characterized by a "celebratory" combination of big beat, techno, trip hop, and funk. It is known for its heavy beats ("block-rockin' beats"), repetitive bass lines (often from the Roland TB-303), and extensive use of samples. For example, Going Out Of My Head (the third single in order), contains the riff from Yvonne Elliman's cover of The Who's I Can't Explain. The production was done by Norman Cook himself in his personal studio, The House of Love. The founder of Skint Records, Damian Harris, described the album more as a "collection" rather than a cohesive album, as many tracks had been recorded quite some time before its release. The 3.5-inch diskette icon on the cover is a tribute to the New Order's single Blue Monday, which featured a 5.25-inch diskette (!)
Although the worldwide "explosion" of Fatboy Slim came with the next album, his debut was recognized as gold by the BPI in the United Kingdom.
