About the album Arena

The Arena by Duran Duran, released in November 1984, was not just a live album; it was the pinnacle of "Duranmania." With its distinctive blue and red cover, it captured the moment when the band from Birmingham dominated the world, offering a glossy, almost cinematic soundtrack of their then empire. Although the cover stated "Recorded Around The World 1984," most of the material came from their concert at the Oakland Coliseum in California in April 1984.

The album bears the signature of Duran Duran themselves and Nile Rodgers. Rodgers, having already transformed The Reflex into a global number 1, gave the sound a solid, funky touch that made the live performances sound extremely professional — although many critics of the time suspected extensive studio overdubbing to achieve this flawless result. The album's "bait" was the sole studio track, The Wild Boys. It was recorded at Maison Rouge in London in the summer of 1984. With its tribal rhythm and the epic video clip — the most expensive of its time — it became a global smash hit, reaching No2 in the USA and Britain. Arena was a massive commercial success, reaching No4 in the USA and No6 in the United Kingdom. It was accompanied by a whole marketing strategy that included the film Arena (An Absurd Notion), a tour book, and even a board game (!)

For fans, Arena is the ultimate relic of the golden age of the "Fab Five," before the original lineup began to dissolve. For critics, it was often considered "overly stylized" and less authentic than a typical live album, as the audience's energy was often toned down in the mix to highlight technical precision. Yet, it remains a document of pop extravagance and the era when Duran Duran was the biggest band on the planet.
