The Birthday Party

The Birthday Party

Group
The Birthday Party was an Australian post-punk band formed in 1977 in Melbourne. Initially known as The Boys Next Door, the band included members such as Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, Rowland S. Howard, Tracy Pew, and Phill Calvert. They renamed themselves The Birthday Party in 1980 and settled in London, where they gained fame for their dark and explosive music, as well as for their dynamic live performances. Influenced by punk, but also by blues and gothic aesthetics, they laid the foundations for the genre later called gothic rock and more broadly industrial. The band disbanded in 1983, leaving a significant musical legacy and influencing many artists in the alternative and experimental scene. After the breakup, Nick Cave continued with a successful career, forming Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
