City
for their 250-word story
City is one of the most iconic bands from East Germany (GDR), having left a mark on the history of German-speaking rock. They were founded in East Berlin in 1972 by Fritz Puppel and Klaus Selmke. Although they started by playing covers of Western bands like the Rolling Stones and Santana, the pivotal moment in their career came in 1974 with the addition of Bulgarian musicians Emil Bogdanow and Georgi Gogow. The success of "Am Fenster" was such that in 2000 it was voted the top German rock song of the 20th century. City managed to survive the strict state committees of the GDR, maintaining an artistic quality that allowed them to continue their career even after the reunification of Germany, until 2022 when they announced their dissolution.
