He was born on February 5, 1969, in Boston, Massachusetts. He gained fame in the 1980s and 1990s by combining R&B and hip hop into a unique style known as new jack swing. His major hits include the songs "My Prerogative" and "Every Little Step." Brown has also appeared in movies and television shows.
