On The Level by Status Quo
About the album On The Level
On The Level by Status Quo, released on February 21, 1975, is considered one of the top albums of the band's "golden" era. It was recorded in the winter of 1974 at IBC Studios and Phonogram Studios in London. The production was done by the band itself (Status Quo), with production assistant and sound engineer Damon Lyon-Shaw.
On The Level is the epitome of Boogie Rock and Hard Rock, with intense rhythms, simple but dynamic riffs, and blues influences. Most tracks were written by Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt, Alan Lancaster, and Bob Young (the "fifth" Quo). The album closes with the cover of Chuck Berry's Bye Bye Johnny. Also, the track I Saw The Light is often attributed to Hank Williams, although here it is a composition by Rossi/Young. The album is known for the photograph of the band inside an Ames Room (a room of optical illusion), where the members appear to have different sizes relative to each other.
Down Down was the only single released from the album (November 1974) and marked the band's only No. 1 hit in the United Kingdom. The album itself went straight to the top of the charts (No. 1) in Great Britain.
