About the album Nowhere
Nowhere, the debut album by the British band Ride, was released on October 15, 1990, by Creation Records. It is considered one of the cornerstones of shoegaze, combining the intensity of noise with classic pop melodies. The initial reviews were mostly positive, with Melody Maker describing it as "dazzling." However, some publications like NME were more reserved at the beginning. It is now recognized as a masterpiece.
The band members were only 18-20 years old during the recording, which added a raw, youthful energy to the result. The album was recorded "live" in the studio with producer Marc Waterman, who suffered a nervous breakdown during the process. The sound is characterized by layers of distorted guitar, heavy use of reverb, and ethereal harmonies. It combines the psychedelia of Stone Roses, the noise of Sonic Youth, and the melancholy of The Cure. The song lyrics reflect youthful alienation, post-adolescent romance, and a sense of "oceanic" isolation. The iconic cover depicts a blue wave without a crest.
Nowhere achieved significant commercial success for an independent release, reaching No. 11 in the United Kingdom, where it has sold over 60,000 copies.
