About the album Strange Weather
Strange Weather from 1987 is the twelfth studio album by British singer Marianne Faithfull. It is considered one of the most significant milestones in her career, as it marked her return to the music scene after she managed to permanently overcome her heroin addiction. The album was named after the title song, which was written especially for her by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan. The title and the song are dedicated to her partner, Howard Tose, who had committed suicide shortly before.
The album moves through an atmospheric mix of rock, blues, jazz, and dark cabaret. Faithfull's performance is now more "cracked" and hoarse, reminiscent of Billie Holiday's later period. The production was signed by Hal Willner, who helped Faithfull redefine her artistic identity. The album featured great musicians such as guitarist Bill Frisell and Dr. John on piano. The cover is a creation by photographer Tony Wright. It exudes the essence of the album, with a black-and-white or low-light aesthetic that matches the melancholic style of the songs.
The album received rave reviews and was characterized as a "dark masterpiece". Commercially, however, it did not fare very well. One of the highest positions it reached on a chart was No16 in New Zealand. In Britain, it stopped at No78.
