Acerca del álbum You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore, Vol. 5

You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore, Vol. 5 es la quinta parte de la monumental serie de grabaciones en vivo de Frank Zappa, lanzada en julio de 1992. Este doble CD se destaca por el marcado contraste entre sus dos discos, abarcando dos períodos muy diferentes de su carrera. Contiene la primera aparición grabada de 27 canciones que no habían sido lanzadas previamente en interpretación en vivo.

El primer CD pertenece a la época de los "Original Mothers" (1965–1969), enfocándose en otras palabras en el primer período de la banda The Mothers of Invention. Incluye material raro, extractos de ensayos y diálogos tras bambalinas. Es significativa la presencia de Lowell George (posteriormente de Little Feat) en 10 piezas, así como la participación de Noel Redding (bajista de Jimi Hendrix Experience) en un fragmento de ballet de Mozart (!) El segundo CD está dedicado exclusivamente a la banda de 1982, la cual incluía virtuosos como Steve Vai en la guitarra y Chad Wackerman en la batería. Las grabaciones provienen principalmente de conciertos en Europa (Ginebra, Múnich, etc.) y contienen extensas interpretaciones improvisadas de piezas como City Of Tiny Lites y The Black Page #2. El álbum cierra con la pieza "Geneva Farewell", donde Zappa interrumpe abruptamente el concierto en Ginebra debido a que los espectadores lanzaban cigarrillos al escenario, gritando la frase característica: "Houselights! The concert's over!".

Los críticos a menudo describen el álbum como «esquizofrénico» debido a la diferencia de estilo entre los dos discos, y muchos prefieren la perfección técnica del segundo disco sobre la naturaleza experimental y a menudo caótica del primero.
