Throbbing Gristle
Throbbing Gristle, formed in London in 1975 by Genesis P-Orridge, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Peter Christopherson, and Chris Carter, were the pioneers of industrial music. Originating from the provocative art collective COUM Transmissions, the group was born with the purpose of shocking the conservative morals of the era and completely subverting the rules of traditional rock music. During their career, the band developed an entirely new sonic code, based on noise generators, manipulated tape loops, and primitive electronic rhythms. Through their own record label, Industrial Records, they established the iconic slogan "Industrial Music for Industrial People," giving a name to an entire musical movement. Their lyrics and live performances explored extreme and dark themes, such as fascism, mind control, and social alienation, which led a British Member of Parliament to publicly label them as "wreckers of civilization." To this day, Throbbing Gristle remain one of the most influential acts of the avant-garde scene, having forever changed our perception of what can be considered music.
