Syd Barrett was an English musician, born on January 6, 1946, in Cambridge, England. He was an original member of Pink Floyd and is considered a pioneer in the creation of the psychedelic rock sound. Syd Barrett wrote most of the songs on the band's first album, “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” (1967). His compositions are characterized by surreal lyrics and experimental melodies. Due to mental difficulties and deterioration due to drug use, he left Pink Floyd in 1968 and released two solo albums. He retired from music in 1972 and lived the rest of his years in relative seclusion. Syd Barrett died on July 7, 2006. His influence on rock music remains significant.
