Bob Dylan & The Band

Group

The collaboration between Bob Dylan and The Band was not just a partnership, but an electric discharge that changed the course of rock 'n' roll. It all started in 1965 when Dylan, seeking a wilder, "dirtier" sound, enlisted the then Hawks. Together they crossed the Atlantic on the infamous '66 tour, facing the disapproval of folk purists with a wall of electric noise and intensity. After Dylan's motorcycle accident, the group retreated to the tranquility of Woodstock, to the legendary pink house (Big Pink). There, in the basement, away from the spotlight, a mythology was born. With a tape recorder and plenty of alcohol, they recorded dozens of tracks that seemed to come from another, old America—full of parables, humor, and melancholy. These sessions were later released as the iconic "The Basement Tapes" (1975). Their chemistry was organic: Dylan provided the poetry and unpredictability, and The Band the steel coherence and earthy harmonies. It was a union of spirits that proved rock can be both spiritual, wild, and deeply human.
