About the album The Downward Spiral

In 1992, Trent Reznor moved to the Benedict Canyon area of Los Angeles to the house where members of the "Charlie Manson family" committed the murder of actress Sharon Tate on August 9, 1969. There, Reznor created his own studio, recorded the EP titled Broken, and the following year prepared Nine Inch Nails' second album, which would be The Downward Spiral.

The Downward Spiral of 1994 would bring major changes to how industrial rock and industrial metal would sound from then on. Reznor writes all the compositions of the album. The thematic content of the lyrics deals with the actions of a misanthrope, who takes on humanity and who, shortly before the end of his life, manages to kill God. The entire The Downward Spiral is the result of its creator's drug addiction, as well as the deep depression Trent Reznor was experiencing during that period—a depression he stubbornly refused to confront. The album closes with the now-legendary song Hurt, which Johnny Cash chose to cover eight years later (!)

The album reached No. 2 in the United States and No. 9 in the United Kingdom. Sales of The Downward Spiral in the U.S. have exceeded 4,000,000 copies (!)
