About the album Secrets

The album Secrets by Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson was released in September 1978 by Arista Records. It constitutes one of the most important milestones of their collaboration, combining social criticism with the sophisticated sounds of the time.

The album moves in the genres of Jazz-Funk and Soul, incorporating elements of disco and contemporary pop. The music is characterized by the use of the T.O.N.T.O. synthesizer and the "deep" drumming of Harvey Mason. The production is co-signed by Scott-Heron and Jackson, with the significant contribution of Malcolm Cecil (as associate producer and sound engineer), who was also the creator of T.O.N.T.O. The single Angel Dust was Scott-Heron's biggest commercial success on Arista, reaching No. 15 on the Hot Soul Singles, a song warning about the dangers of drugs.

Despite the success of the single, the album's total sales were considered moderate for the company's standards at the time. The album reached No. 61 on the Billboard and No. 11 on the Jazz charts.
